We are the East Surrey Guild of Weavers Spinners and Dyers, known as
Creative Fibres.
We are a small friendly group meeting every month to pursue our common
interest in fibre arts.
The group was founded in August 1991 when the first members met in Dorking.
At this time we were known as the Dorking Guild. To begin with, our meetings
were held in the Dorking Adult Centre in Dene Street; from there we moved
to the Friends Meeting House, followed by the Scout Hut in Ashstead, and
then the village hall at Headley. At this time, we had a change of name,
(as we were no longer meeting in Dorking), and we became the East Surrey
Guild. Finally, we moved to our current location, Box Hill Village Hall,
where we have been meeting since 2012.
Many of us are members of other societies and groups, such as Epsom Spinners,
Ashtead Beadworkers, and the Braiders and Lacemakers Guilds, and some
of us meet in informal gatherings to pursue beading and knitting on other
days of the week.
Although we are "weavers, spinners, and dyers" we encourage
all textile disciplines. Our members' interests cover a wide range of
crafts including spinning, (with spindle and wheel); weaving, (inkle,
heddle, circular); braiding (kumihimo, ply-split, finger); dyeing; felting,
(nuno); knitting (domino); crochet; embroidery; textile manipulation such
as quilting and patchwork; and paper crafts.
Does all this sound appealing?
Do come and join in on our open day, or one of our general meetings and
find out.
